The Wave of Patience
Patience. The waves teach me about patience. As does yoga. So far, my time at Vikara is revealing to me what I need to focus on. And that’s ironically to stop trying so hard to… Focus. Instead, I am being shown by the ocean, the beautiful people of Vikara, and Ecuador as a whole, to simply relax into life. I need to let mySelf be, allowing my mind to roam as free as the pelicans flying over the ocean... For instance, on my surfboard, I am watching myself be so eager and so ke

Move in Stillness
He tells me to paddle out when there isn't a set of waves coming in... Of course I do not listen. Instead, what I try to do is muscle my way out past the break, giving myself anything but a break… It’s called looking for “the window.” A brilliant surf expression applicable to all things in life. The nature-lover, who longs to be connected to Mother Earth. The healer, who transcends all problems with a more expansive mindset. The writer, who's a friend to herself

Innercise the Exercise
We start by sensing our whole bodies. Sitting on our butts, legs apart and extended, we then draw our awareness to our feet. "They should be active," our instructor explains, "Never let them fall sideways." Little by little, our teacher breaks down the fundamentals of yoga. And how the secret of practice lies in the micro-skills. "It's in the details," he says to the class, "If you nail these, you can do any pose in the books..." "It's an innercise!" In learning about the fun
